Today marks the nationwide Day of Silence, an event that calls attention to harassment and equality issues. The Day of Silence brings attention to all the voices who have been silenced, when participants take a vow not to speak, in order to represent their peers who suffer quietly through harassment, violence and intolerance.
Participants carry cards which read: “I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement bringing attention to the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies,” it states. “My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by anti-LGBT bullying, name calling and harassment. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward building awareness and making a commitment to address these injustices.”
