Gay rights group GetEqual has been following President Obama to events all over the country, confronting him about his lack of action on such issues as ‘don’t ask don’t tell,’ and the Defense of Marriage Act. The Obama administration has so far failed to act to end these discriminatory policies. Despite Obama’s verbal commitments to ending DADT, LGBTQ people and their allies are getting tired of waiting.
Obama said on MTV last week “This is not a question of whether the policy will end,” he said. “This policy will end. And it will end on my watch. But I do have an obligation to make sure that I’m following some of the rules. I can’t simply ignore laws that are out there.”
Richard Socarides, gay-rights advocate and former advisor to President Bill Clinton, says, “if we don’t have a partner in Washington in Barack Obama to advance a civil rights agenda, we’ll find other people to work with until we get one.”
